How to Choose a Hair Extensions Technician

Bond’s Guide On Choosing Your Hair Extensionist

There are so many hair extensions technicians and salons to choose from, how do you know which one is the best, or more importantly, right for you? In this guide I’ll explain how to choose, what to look out for and what questions to ask.

The most important things when considering having hair extensions are;

  1. Protecting your natural hair from damage
  2. Having gorgeous long hair!

And yes, in that order.

Before getting Hair Extensions, Ask the Right Questions

When choosing your hair extensions professional, you should feel comfortable asking questions – and your chosen stylist should be happy to answer them.

Which Questions to ask

Ask about the hair

Is the hair Chinese, Indian, European , Mongolian or Russian (or from a goat or horse)?

What method will be used to add extensions?

  • Glue gun
  • Weave
  • Tapes
  • Pre bonded
  • Micro ring / nano beads

At Bond Hair, we use Indian, Mongolia, Russian and European hair and specialise in flat, pre-bonded keratin air extensions, using hot or cold fusion that won’t damage the hair. We also offer tape hair extensions.

How Experienced are they?

How long have they been doing hair extensions and where did they train? Can they prove their certification?

Do they have a portfolio of their work? Try to view their past work and look for reviews on social media and on Google.

At bond hair, we have over 11 years of experience and are fully qualified with NVQ2/3 and are fully insured.  There is a portfolio of our work available to view in our gallery, you can also check out our reviews on our Instagram and Facebook pages. References are also available on request.

Ask to see the bonds

What lies beneath is important to judging any technicians work.

Photos of the finished look on their Instagram may look great, but things are not always as they seem.

You want to ensure the bonds are applied neatly, in a uniform ‘bricked’ approach and that small, consistent-sized sections of hair are attached to each bond.

Bonds should be small in size. Avoid those that look like long sausage shapes , instead opt for a small, flat bond which will be far more comfortable to wear. Read more on our ‘Good vs Bad Bonds’ blog.

Though we specialise in keratin flat bonded hair extensions, we also offer tape hair extensions and micro-rings.

Hair extensions should cause no damage to the natural hair if fitted by a professional and cared for correctly by you. We can add thickness to your hair in as little as 30 minutes, and achieve a full head adding long length in as little as 2 hours!

Try Before You Buy

Unsure about bonds? We offer a FREE Try before you buy service. At consultation we can apply a couple of bonds to your hair so you can see how they feel, before committing to hair extensions.
